Module overview
An 8,000-word essay on an approved topic, which may relate either to the music of a specific region, tradition or genre, or to an issue in ethnomusicological theory. The School regulations for Independent Study Projects apply. (See the
Guidelines for Independent Study Projects and Extended Essays.
)
Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
Students will develop the skill to work independently on the music of a region of Africa or Asia or the Middle East or on another topic in ethnomusicology agreed with the course convenor. To do this they will identify an area of interest to them and define a research question, refine and pursue that question via library research (possibly augmented by fieldwork or practical work), and write an argued dissertation with an apparatus of footnotes and references in standard academic format.
