Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

At the end of the module, a student should be able to demonstrate…

  • knowledge and understanding of intermediate Indonesian grammar
  • knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Indonesian vocabulary. About 2300 words should be known by the end of the course
  • knowledge and understanding of the appropriateness of a wide range of Indonesian structures and expressions in a given context
  • the ability to understand passages in written Indonesian of medium length on everyday and some specialised topics
  • the ability to produce passages in written Indonesian of medium length on everyday and some specialised topics
  • the ability to understand spoken Indonesian and to engage in spoken discourse of medium complexity on everyday and some specialised topics

Workload

Total of 22 weeks teaching with 4 hours classroom contact per week in language classes.

Scope and syllabus

his module provides teaching and learning of intermediate level Indonesian language. It aims to strengthen the competence Indonesian language abilities of those students who have already studied Indonesian at an elementary level. Emphasis is on the written style, but time is also given for oral and listening work, using a range of audio-visual materials including Indonesian films and documentaries. In addition to revising and strengthening understanding and application of basic grammatical structures, further grammatical forms are introduced. Students will be introduced to Jakarta colloquialisms. By the end of the year student should have a knowledge of around 2300 words.

The module allows students to interact with Indonesian speakers in Indonesian and to use original Indonesian language sources within the level covered in the module. This provides students with a basis to approach research topics relating to Indonesian language and the histories, societies and cultures associated with Indonesian.

Method of assessment

  • one three-hour written exam (70%) and an oral exam (20%) taken in May/June
  • 4 compositions written during the year and 4 class tests (10%)
