Module overview

Develops further the range of language skills attained in the first year, with emphasis on reading and comprehension. A wide variety of Korean texts is read and discussed in class, along with closely co-ordinated grammar practice.


Prerequisites Successful completion of Elementary Korean or eqivalent (module convenor's approval required)

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to demonstrate:

  1. knowledge and understanding of intermediate Korean grammar
  2. knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Korean vocabulary
  3. knowledge and understanding of the appropriateness of a wide range of Korean structures and expressions in a given context
  4. the ability to understand passages written in Korean of medium length on everyday and some specialised topics
  5. the ability to produce passages written in Korean on everyday and some specialised topics
  6. the ability to understand spoken Korean and to engage in spoken discourse of medium complexity on everyday and some specialised topics


  • Total taught hours: 60 hours. 2 hours of lectures per week and one hour tutorial for 20 weeks.
  • Independent study: 240 hours
  • Total hours for module: 300 hours

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination taken in May/June (70%); a ten-minute oral exam (10%); continuous assessment (20%).
