On Sunday 26th January, the British Museum is hosting an event of talks and screenings focusing on Fereydoun Ave, one of the most influential individuals in Iranian contemporary art. He will be joined by Sarah Stewart, Vali Mahlouji and Hormoz Hematian, who will examine his practice as an artist, designer, a patron, mentor and collector. The event will be introduced by Venetia Porter.
With a career spanning more than four decades, Fereydoun Ave, born in Tehran in 1945, is a member of the first generation of Iranian contemporary artists. Since the 1970s, with the rapid development of the Iranian art scene, Ave has maintained a central position in the Iranian art community. Educated in England and the United States, he established an alternative art space, 13 Vanak Street, in Tehran in 1984 in the northern part of the city. Ave has launched the careers of several of Iran’s most celebrated artists and during the 1990s he worked closely with his friend and mentor, the American painter and sculptor Cy Twombly.
The event will take place from 2-5 pm, followed by a reception, in the Stevenson Lecture Theatre of the British Museum. Tickets are free but advance booking is essential.
