About this event

Akeim Toussaint Buck

Akeim Toussaint Buck is a multifaceted performing artist, born in Jamaica and raised in England.

He seeks to create moving, thought provoking, and free spirited projects which are accessible to a wide audience. Since graduating from Northern School of Contemporary Dance with a first-class honours Bachelor degree in Performing Arts, Akeim has been involved in cross disciplinary projects working with a wide range of artists. His focus as a maker and collaborator is to combine expressive skills such as dance, poetry, beat-box, singing and acting through performance and telling new stories that reach beyond existing dance audiences. Since graduating, Akeim has worked on numerous projects with different artists and companies around the UK as a dancer, beatboxer, actor and singer.

Akeim will be performing his new solo Windows of Displacement* where he works with dance, song and spoken word. He explores his own experience of displacement, being born a citizen in Jamaica, and raised battling to become a citizen in England. Windows of Displacement explores historical and contemporary political contexts of displacement, including imperialism and colonialism. The performance aims to create a story of the past, present and future of humanity.

After the performance there will be an open discussion on with Sai Murray poet, writer, spokenword artist and Akeim’s artistic advisor on the project. Sai will chair the question and answer section of the evening.

* The development of Windows of Displacement is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. It is further supported by Yorkshire Dance through the Amplified project, a two-year development programme committed to presenting work in new contexts and creating a dialogue between audiences and artists in Yorkshire and the North funded by Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
