25 May 2020

Congratulations to SOAS History of Art and Archaeology PhD student Kasia Ploskonka, who has been nominated as one of the winners of the 2020 CAPture Central Asia Photo Contest , run by the Central Asia Program (CAP) at George Washington University.

The image above shows a scene outside of the Ichan-Kala in Khiva, Uzbekistan, near the eastern gate of Polvon Darvoza: two women prepare for the day by baking meat filled pastries called samsa.

Kasia's stunning photos were taken during her PhD fieldwork research, which looks at contemporary art produced after the dissolution of the USSR in 1991 up to present day within the Central Asian regions of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. To find out more about Kasia's research, click here .
