SOAS statement on A-Level grades

17 August 2020

We welcome the government’s decision that A-level results will now be determined by teacher-predicted grades (CAGs).

We are delighted to accept all students who meet the terms of their original offer and for those who are accepting an offer through Clearing. We look forward to welcoming them to SOAS in September.

This has been a very challenging period for all A-level students, we are seeking to ensure potential students have clear advice and help to make the right decisions. We continue to do all we can to support our applicants, and to welcome students through the Clearing system.

We have immediately contacted all students with places at SOAS to confirm that they continue to have places with us – and to ensure that students who have had offers from us know that they will be able to now take up places with us if they now meet those offers through the A level grades already announced or through their CAGs.

The announcement today from Ofqual that they are now confirming the Centre Assessed Grades for A level results has been a further abrupt change by Ofqual.

It is very welcome that students will have grades which more closely reflect their efforts and abilities, as assessed by those who should know them most closely academically, their teachers.

This may of course have significant implications for all universities, who have confirmed places and offered and accepted new students through Clearing in good faith – working with the grades awarded and announced on Thursday.
