2 June 2021

On Friday May 28 SOAS alumni and Politics Department academic, Dafydd Fell, gave an online talk on his new book Green Parties in Taiwan to the University of Washington’s Taiwan Studies Programme. This brought to an end his 12 part World Book tour for Taiwan’s Green Parties: Alternative Politics in Taiwan.

The book was officially published on March 16 2021, over eight years after he began the research project. Dafydd then began the tour three days later with an online talk for the SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies. The video is available here .

This was next followed by two shorter book talks. First was an appearance talking about the book on ICRT, Taiwan’s English language radio station’s Taiwan This Week on April 9. ( Click Here to Listen )  Then on April 15 Dafydd introduced the book at a new publications panel at the European Association of Taiwan Studies Conference held at Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic.

The events then became more intensive after the start of the SOAS third term in late April. First on April 28 he spoke about the book at the University of Central Lancashire’s Northern Institute of Taiwan Studies. The next day he gave the book’s first talk in North America, speaking at the University of Notre Dame's Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies.

The next week saw a more interactive event at Zurich University’s Taiwan Studies Lecture Series, titled: A Discussion of Environmental Politics in Taiwan Starting from the Book Taiwan Green Parties: Alternative Politics in Taiwan. In this case the author of a book Environmental Governance in Taiwan that was frequently cited in Dafydd’s book, Simona Grano, led the discussion on Green Parties in Taiwan and environmental politics in Taiwan. The event video is available here . The next stop was the European Research Center for Contemporary Taiwan at Germany’s Tubingen University on Monday May 10 as part of its Taiwan Colloquium Summer 2021 Series. The event video is available here .

The next event was part of the University of Alberta’s Taiwan Studies Programme’s Taiwan Expert Series. The video of this interview is available here .

The tour came to an end with two events on May 27 and May 28. The former was a book talk given to the Center of Taiwan Studies at Ljubljana University in Slovenia and the latter at the University of Washington.

There are still a couple of tour events that have been recorded as podcasts. These include a podcast interview on the book that was recorded for Ghost Island Media on April 23 ( click to listen here ) and also a podcast interview for the SOAS Radio Research Forum which was recorded on May 18. Additionally Dafydd is now planning an event on June 28 which will feature authors of books on Green Parties in Asia, the Americas and Asia discussing their research experiences. This will be part of the 2021 SOAS Taiwan Studies Summer School.

Dafydd plans to resume the world Green Parties in Taiwan tour in the autumn, hopefully with a mix of both online and some in person book talks.
