Biography

Andrew Thompson is Chair of Global History at Oxford University where he co-directs the Global History Centre. For five years previously he was CEO of the UK's Arts and Humanities Research Council and International Champion of UK Research and Innovation (the UK's nine Research Councils). Andrew has worked in HE institutions (University of Leeds, University of Exeter, and University of Oxford) for 27 years. 

Since 2017, Andrew has been Chair of the External Advisory Board of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in the School of Advanced Studies, University of London. As UKRI International Champion, he represented all UK Research Councils on the Executive Body of Science Europe and Governing Board of the Global Research Council, consortia of national research funding agencies (2017-21). Andrew also sits on the British Museum Research Committee and the Royal Shakespeare Company. 

In 2021 he was awarded a CBE in the UK's New Years' Honours List for "services to research".
