PhD Research

My research focuses on co-operative institutions in rural development in North India, with a primary focus on farmer producer organisations (FPOs) in the state of Madhya Pradesh. I question how caste hierarchies and categories, as well as norms and forms of masculinities mediate how people and groups establish and engage with these institutions. In doing so, my research explores whether such institutions act as sites for the disruption and/or reproduction of existing sets of social relations. I consider how co-operative institutions are linked to the market and the state, as well as the implications of the above processes for state, national and global policy arenas.
