PhD Research

This PhD explores the Moroccan Sufi Order Qadiriyya al-Budshishiyya in Europe. It proposes a comparative analysis of the two strands of the order in European contexts, the one made of Moroccan members, and the other, of 'revert' Muslims and converts to Islam. It seeks to understand the social and ideological dimensions of a particular Islamic religiosity in Europe, and it explores to what extend those ways of embodying religion are developing distinctive and local forms of European Islam. It also addresses the acceptance of Budshishiyya's discourses and narratives by people of those European milieus where the order has uprooted. Within the Budshishiyya, religious narratives are not homogeneous, but rather portray a complex kaleidoscopic scenario where diverse local European social values are simultaneously adapted and contested.
