Our closing event is a very special celebration of SOAS’s five-decade long relationship with the Mande culture of West Africa, featuring debate, films & a special performance by the legendary kora master Ballaké Sissoko, hosted by Professor Lucy Durán and SOAS Concert Series.

Exactly 50 years ago in 1972, the father of Ballaké Sissoko, Djelimady Sissoko attended the first ever conference of what was then known as Manding Studies here at SOAS. We feel extremely privileged to welcome Ballaké Sissoko to showcase his musical heritage and practice as we gather to celebrate.
