Course overview

Course aim

This course aims to provide students with a secure grounding in elementary Persian to enhance their ability to use the language by actively participating in the discussion of several contemporary issues. The course focuses on acquisition of expressions and the development of existing language skills. Students are asked to give explanations for opinions and plans, tell a story or narrate the plot of a book or a video. This course is delivered by the Language Centre.

Method

The course is taught mainly in Persian and further develops the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students engage in interactive language activities, participating in group and pair work to practice vocabulary, expressions, grammar and structures. There is an overview, consolidation and feedback session in the final week, concentrating on the material covered in the term. You are expected to attend regularly, participate in class and complete homework regularly to ensure learning progress.

The course will be based on materials sent by your teacher.

Entry requirements and progression route

For the first stage of Persian Pre-Intermediate (I.e. Pre-Intermediate 1), you should have completed Persian Elementary 3 at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of 120 guided learning hours. The progression route from Persian Pre-Intermediate 1 is to Persian Pre-Intermediate 2; from Pre-Intermediate 2 to Pre-Intermediate 3. Towards the end of the Persian Pre-Intermediate 3 course, the teacher will discuss options for further study if you wish to continue your study of the language.

Please note, that each term, classes are subject to quorum requirements.

Structure

Persian Pre-Intermediate 1 

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • talk about job experiences
  • talk about shopping (in shops, online)
  • discuss issues when living in big cities (transport, stress, pollution)
  • make invitations (by texting a message, leaving a voicemail)
  • talk about environmental issues
  • discuss traditions about marriage in Iran
  • talk about Iranian music
  • report a car accident
  • summarise short stories from Persian classic and contemporary literature

Persian Pre-Intermediate 2 

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • talk about school types in Iran (state, private schools)
  • discuss advantages and disadvantages of students’ exchange
  • talk about travel and accommodation
  • talk about the best life experiences
  • describe about Persian and Islamic architecture
  • discuss the influence of social media
  • talk about benefits of sports (socially, mentally)
  • discuss about Iranian history makers ( Mosaddeq )
  • compare the role of women in in the past and present societies
  • summarise short stories from Persian classic and contemporary literature

Persian Pre-Intermediate 3 

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • talk about volunteering
  • talk about cultural heritages and their benefits
  • discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the fashion industry
  • arrange to rent or buy a property
  • identify different ethnics and religions in Iran
  • talk about celebrities and their influence on young people
  • discuss cultural events ( Yalda Night )
  • summarise short stories from Persian classic and contemporary literature

The above is an indication of content that may be covered over the duration of the course but it could vary depending on the level and progress of students in the class.
