The Centre for Film Studies at SOAS Second Annual Postgraduate Symposium

Symposium and Public Lecture free and open to everyone

Tickets to the screening of Sembène! are £5 and sold separately through Bertha DocHouse

The Centre for Film Studies Second Annual Postgraduate Symposium is all about crossing boundaries. Cinema, as a medium and industry, shapes and transcends boundaries that can be geographic, but also time-based, made up of genre conventions, gender distinctions, or that rely on the mutually constitutive relationship between film and spectator. At the same time they are fluid and ever changing. This conference will explore such boundaries and demarcations, as well as the ways in which they are becoming less fixed, and what these changes might imply.

The symposium has an exciting schedule of academic and non-academic events. First, our keynote lecture is also the SOAS Second African Film Public Lecture, delivered by Professor Samba Gadjigo, who will discuss his documentary Sembène! , which tells the story of the "father of African cinema," the self-taught novelist and filmmaker Ousmane Sembène. Second, the symposium itself will consist of three diverse panels putting into conversation some of the innovative doctoral research currently being undertaken in the SOAS Centre for Film Studies. Finally, the symposium will wrap up with a screening of the documentary Sembène! (co-directed by Samba Gadjigo and Jason Silverman), followed by a Q&A with Professor Gadjigo, at Bertha DocHouse, as part of the first SOAS Centenary film series.
