Mode of Attendance: Part-time

The course aims to strengthen students’ understanding of the structures of Classical Arabic and to help them gain deeper comprehension of the language of the Qur'an. Students will also explore the aesthetic features of Qur’anic Language, and the main characteristics of Sarf (Morphology) and Nah’ou (Grammar and conjugation). Prior knowledge of Quran reading and basic Qur’anic vocabulary is essential. To join this course, a short informal online assessment can be conducted, please book here.)

Method

The course is taught in English and Arabic and the emphasis is placed on reading and comprehension skills; however, all other skills will be tackled too.  This course provides a good balance between understanding the system of Qur’anic conjugation,  syntax and translation. Students will also acquire and develop analysing skills enabling them to comprehend linguistic aspects of the holy Quran. They will be working in groups and individually to achieve the best outcomes intended.

This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material and regular feedback from the tutor. The course objective will be achieved within the 10-week course.

Entry Requirements and Progression Route

This is the second stage of the Qur’anic Arabic course. You need to be assessed for your reading and comprehension skills, or you can have completed the Qur’anic Beginners 1 to 3 course. The progression route from Qur’anic Arabic Elementary 1 is to Elementary 2, then from Elementary 2 to Elementary 3.

Please note, that each term, classes are subject to quorum requirements.

Structure

Arabic (Qur’anic) Elementary 1

Through the Qur’anic context, in this course you will:

  • Improve your reading skills and incorporate essential Tajweed rules.
  • Use dictionaries by applying your knowledge of  the Arabic root system.
  • Use the root system to predict the meaning of other words
  • Translate familiar Qur’anic verses.
  • Transcribe the verses you listen to.
  • Differentiate between different types of nouns in Arabic.
  • Differentiate between the structures of phrases and complete sentences.
  • Discover the importance of the definite article in constructing a sentence.
  • Compare between nominative, accusative, and genitive nouns.
  • Discover number and gender agreement of nouns and adjectives.
  • Learn how to discriminate between nouns and verbs.
  • Learn how attached pronouns are used with nouns and particles.
  • Learn about definite and indefinite Idafa construction.
     

Arabic (Qur’anic) Elementary 2

Through the Qur’anic context, in this course you will:

  • Incorporate essential Tajweed rules when reading familiar and unfamiliar verses.
  • Discover some forms of emphasis in Qur’an.
  • Examine how particles can affect the meaning of nominal sentences.
  • Practise reading hamzatul-wasl and hamzatul-qat’ effectively.
  • Inspect the meaning of new verses with reference to newly learned structure. 
  • Differentiate between different types of adverbs.
  • Examine the diacritics positions and its effect on meaning.
  • Discover the structure of verbal sentences.
  • Differentiate between complete and incomplete verbs
  • Conjugate regular verbs in past tense with all pronouns.
  • Use singular and plural attached pronouns correctly.
  • Distinguish between transitive and intransitive verbs. 
  • Use some patterns to derive verbs from root letters
     

Arabic (Qur’anic) Elementary 3

Through the Qur’anic context, in this course you will:

  • Read Surahs with confidence applying Waqf and Ibtida’ rules.
  • Use different types of dictionaries efficiently.
  • Learn all functions of accusative nouns.
  • Conjugate regular and hollow past tense verbs with all pronouns. 
  • Practise the use of patterns to predict the meaning of words.
  • Conduct simple conversation using interrogative words.
  • Conjugate regular and hollow verbs in present tense.
  • Use active participle to discover the meaning of Allah’s names.
  • Learn different types of emphasis in nominal and verbal sentences.
  • Learn kana and its sisters, Inna and its sisters.
  • Start to analyse Ayahs according to the rules of Sarf and Nahw.
  • Learn reflexive, transitive and mutual patterns. 
  • Identify complex verb patterns and their indication.
