Course overview
This course aims to consolidate the basis of Korean grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation covered in the first year Beginners course; coverage of more complex structures and vocabulary; emphasis on spoken communication and listening and reading comprehension. This course is delivered by the Language Centre.
Method
The course is taught in English and Korean and includes coverage of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and a good balance between understanding the systems of Korean grammar and vocabulary, developing the skills of comprehending and producing Korean in speech and writing, guided practice in language usage and use and authentic communicative activities.
This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the 10-week course.

Entry requirements and progression route
To be able to join Korean Elementary course you should have completed a Korean Beginners at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of guided learning hours (approximately 60 hours). The progression route from Korean Elementary 1 is to Korean Elementary 2; from Elementary 2 to Elementary 3. Upon successful completion of Korean Elementary 3 you will be able to progress to a Pre-Intermediate level course in Korean.

Structure
Korean Elementary 1
In this course you will cover:
(I Love Korean 2, Unit 1 – Unit 3)
- Honorific speech
- Introducing family members 1: N(이)세요, A/V-(으)세요
- Introducing family members 2: : A/V-(으)셨어요, A/V-고
- Talking about shopping 1: Clothing, ‘ㅡ' deletion , V-아/어 보세요
- Talking about shopping 2: : Adjectives, Color, A-(으)ㄴN, ‘ㄹ' deletion
- Talking about travel experiences: V-(으)ㄹ 거예요
- Talking about travel plans: A/V-(으)면, V-는N, A/V-지 않다
Korean Elementary 2
In this course you will cover:
(I Love Korean 2, Unit 4 – Unit 6)
- Talking about weekend activities: 못 V, V-고 싶다
- Talking about hobbies: V-는 것, A/V-지만
- Opening a bank account: : A-(으)ㄴ데요, V-는데요, N인데요, V-아/어 주세요
- Mailing a package at a post office: V(으)러 가다/오다, N(으)로
- Taking the subway: ‘르’ irregular, V-아야/어야 되다
- Asking for and giving directions: : V-아서/어서, N에서 N까지
Korean Elementary 3
In this course you will cover:
(I Love Korean 2, Unit 7 – Unit 9)
- Asking and answering about availability: : V-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다, V-지 마세요
- Expressing symptoms and causes: A/V -아서/어서, N(이)라서
- Talking about life in Korea: : A/V(으)ㄹ 때, V-거나V, N(이)나 N
- Expressing permission and prohibition: V-아도/어도 되다, V-(으)면 안 되다
- Making phone calls: N(이)지요?, A/V-지요?,N한테/에게/께
- Ordering food by phone and inviting friends over: V-(으)면서, V-고 있다
