Course overview
Course aim
This course aims to consolidate the basis of Korean grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation covered in the first year Beginners course; coverage of more complex structures and vocabulary; emphasis on spoken communication and listening and reading comprehension. This course is delivered by the Language Centre
Method
The course is taught in English and Korean and includes coverage of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and a good balance between understanding the systems of Korean grammar and vocabulary, developing the skills of comprehending and producing Korean in speech and writing, guided practice in language usage and use and authentic communicative activities.
This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material and regular feedback from the tutor. The course objective will be achieved within the 10-week course.

Course materials are not included in the course fee and can also be purchased from the SOAS bookshop bookshop@soas.ac.uk
Entry requirements and progression route
To be able to join Korean Elementary course you should have completed a Korean Beginners at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of guided learning hours (approximately 60 hours). The progression route from Korean Elementary 1 is to Korean Elementary 2; from Elementary 2 to Elementary 3. Upon successful completion of Korean Elementary 3 you will be able to progress to a Pre-Intermediate level course in Korean.
Please note, that each term, courses are subject to quorum requirements.
Korean Elementary 1 and Elementary 2 online are scheduled for our term commencing 24 April 2023.

Structure
Korean Elementary 1
In this course you will cover:
- introducing your family
- talking about travel experience
- giving health advice
- preparing for a social gathering
- talking about your hometown
- describing one’s feelings and emotions
- talking about the future
- process form -ing
- describe verbs
- possessive marker
- honorific form
- comparing word
- conditional word
- verb form – do not (long negative)
- verb form – should do…
- verb form – try to do…
- verb form – to go in order to do…
- verb form – would like to do…
Korean Elementary 2
In this course you will cover:
- talking about hobbies, what you like doing
- expressions of congratulations
- things to do (in the house, at work)
- planning a holiday
- noun modifier –는
- or 이이
- turning a sentence into a nominal phrase using –는 것
- because –(으)니니
- particle ‘to a person’ –에에/께
- continuous form –고 있있/-기기 싫있/힘힘있
- during 동동
- decide to do sth –기기 하있
Korean Elementary 3
In this course you will cover:
- shopping activities
- colours, patterns
- talking about what you do while travelling
- understanding traffic symbols or road signs
- preparing for a trip
- talking about and understanding manners/etiquette
- things you can/cannot do in public places
- talking about one’s habits
- describing object/things
- must not –면 안 되다
- it is okay to do –어/아도 되다
- every 마다
- before –기 전에
- it will be –(을)ㄹ 거예요
- resultant state _어/아 있다
