Course aim

This Arabic Native Speakers Elementary course is designed for students who have a background in speaking Arabic as a mother tongue and wish to reinforce the skills they have and further develop their grammar and vocabulary in a guided and structured way. It is aimed at students who have some ability in speaking their home dialect of Arabic however are not as familiar with Modern Standard Arabic and its grammar. This course is delivered by the Language Centre

If you would be interested in Native Speakers Arabic Elementary 1, please complete the register your interest form. This will allow us to determine whether there is sufficient interest to offer the course in Term 2 (January - March 2025). We will be in touch once we open enrolment for the course.


The course is taught in Arabic with some support in English and includes an increased exposure to Arabic grammar and vocabulary, while developing the skills of comprehension in listening and reading, and the skills of expression in speaking and writing.

#This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher which is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning with complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the 10-week period.

Entry requirements and progression route

This Arabic (Native Speakers) Elementary course is aimed at students who have a background in speaking Arabic as a mother tongue and have some ability in speaking their home dialect. This course takes place each term and students can enrol continuously throughout the year. In the following year, students can progress into Arabic Native Speakers Intermediate.

Students can alternatively progress into another Arabic course after an assessment of their level.

Arabic Native Speakers Elementary 1

In this course you will:

  • talk about living in the city
  • use plurals
  • talk about the weather
  • give reasons and expand sentence structure
  • use interrogatory sentences
  • express likes and dislikes
  • understand and use possessive pronouns
  • talk about feelings and opinion
  • talk about university and school
  • understand and recognise the present tense of verbs
  • expand the use of the definite article
  • apply feminine/masculine adjectives correctly
  • understand and use subject pronouns
  • use nominal and verbal sentences
  • use and differentiate between adverbs, adjectives, and nouns
  • consolidate vocabulary and structures covered
  • speak about your daily routine
  • describe your home and surroundings
  • talk confidently about your studies, work, and leisure
  • express possession of items
  • describe feelings and emotions
  • be able to provide reasons and explanations
  • navigate a restaurant scenario
  • further develop skills of using Arabic numbers and quantities
  • understand and use of the present and past tenses
  • understand the roots and patterns of verbs

Arabic Native Speakers Elementary 2

In this course you will:

  • learn to speak about your social life
  • talk about weekend activities and leisure
  • tell the time
  • give your positive and negative opinions
  • explore the religious activities in different Arab culture
  • use a wider range of ways to describe people and objects
  • use ordinal numbers
  • navigate a hotel booking scenario
  • be able to use quantifiers
  • understand the use of the subjunctive in Arabic
  • be able to use object pronouns
  • be able to report information and opinions
  • talk about studies and scholarships
  • access basic articles and short biographies
  • describe your home and local area
  • understand and use definite and indefinite iḍafah when describing
  • know different ways of describing past actions
  • navigate a job search
  • make plans and express hopes/wishes
  • describe future events (affirmative and negative)
  • create and use comparative sentences
  • create and use superlative sentences
  • understand verb patterns and their implied meanings

Arabic Native Speakers Elementary 3

In this course you will:

  • learn to talk about personal problems
  • explore how to ask for and give advice
  • be able to use the negative form of ‘to be’
  • understand the use of relative pronouns
  • use comparative adjectives
  • arrange a holiday by choosing and booking things
  • understand and use conditional sentences
  • further your understanding of verb forms and patterns
  • confidently express your preferences
  • familiarise yourself with case endings of verbs
  • talk about relationships with friends and family
  • write formal and informal letters
  • understand various cultural celebrations of the Arab World
  • understand the use of lunar and solar months
  • consolidate previously covered grammar rules
  • understand the rules of forming colour adjectives
  • further develop and practice verb forms and patterns
  • be able to express similarities
  • understand and use feminine and plural nouns
  • explore more case endings of verbs
  • learn about the difference in adjectives for people and objects
  • write personalised messages for different occasions
  • learn to conduct a short interview and report
  • discuss the life and work of Nizar Qabbani
  • familiarise yourself with features of Arabic media
  • understand aspects of Middle Eastern history
